Reduce the Risk of Colon Cancer

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed among Americans. The American Cancer Society estimates that about 108,070 new cases of colon cancer and more than 40,000 cases of rectal cancer will be diagnosed in 2009. The good news is that both the incidence of these diseases and the death rate from them are declining, thanks to both improved treatments and earlier diagnosis. To help reduce your risk, try the following simple measures:

Cut back on or avoid eating red or processed meats, such as bacon, sausage, hot dogs, ham, and cold cuts.

Maintain a healthy weight.

Eat fiber-rich foods, including fresh fruits and vegetables.

Registered Nurse

If you want to practice / work as a nurse in the United States, you need to become a registered nurse. Without becoming a registered nurse, you cannot do anything in your profession. Let's have a look at what it takes to become a registered nurse and the roles and responsibilities in the career.

There are two basic educational qualifications when it comes to becoming a registered nurse; must have graduated from a nursing school or from the college in the nursing program and must have passed the national licensing exam. If you can adhere to these two requirements mentioned above, you can become a registered nurse. In the old days, there were no strict requirements to become a registered nurse. Massage Boosts Immune System

Massage Boosts Immune System

We all know that massage feels good, but new evidence suggests that it can be even better for your health than previously thought. Researchers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles noted that while some small studies had shown the health benefits of massage, their larger investigation revealed that Swedish massage triggers measurable and beneficial changes to both endocrine and immune system responses. The researchers recruited 53 physically healthy volunteers who had no mental disorders and divided them into two groups: 29 of the volunteers received 45 minutes of Swedish massage while 24 received 45 minutes of light touch massage. Prior to massage, all the participants were fitted with intravenous catheters so that blood samples could be taken at intervals before and after massage. Results showed significant changes in lymphocytes, white blood cells that are key players in immune system responses; a large decrease in a hormone (arginine vassopressin) believed to play a role in aggressive behavior and linked to prompting increases in the stress hormone cortisol; a decrease in cortisol levels, and a decrease in inflammatory cytokines, which are immune system mediators.

How Do Hearing Aids Work?

How Do Hearing Aids Work?

I can remember growing up you would sometimes see a comedy bit on TV that showed a grandpa with a primitive hearing device to help him with his terrible hearing. In the bit, the senior citizen used a huge cone that was about three times as big as his head which he would stick in his ear to amplify the sound. And if I remember right, it never worked very well.

I don't know if that method of supplementing hearing was every popular but we have had conventional hearing aids around for a long time. In a way to a casual observer, the hearing aid seems to do the opposite of what it is supposed to do. That is because if you see someone wearing a hearing aid, the device blocks the opening to the ear. So it would seem that keeps the person from hearing well when the opposite is actually the truth.

Exercising Properly

There are two main types of exercise that you can do - aerobic and anaerobic. The first one, aerobic, means with oxygen. Aerobic type exercise has an important distinction, it burns fat as the main fuel.

Anaerobic on the other hand, burns sugar as the main source of fuel. Despite common myths, exercise doesn't have to be drastic in any way to provide massive benefits. Even if you choose light exercise, you will still burn fat.

Light exercise will clear out lactic acid, which is a waste of the body, and stimulate your cells to regenerate. To be sure that you are burning fat rather than sugar, it's very important to make sure that you are doing several things as you exercise.

Sleeping Problems? Wake Up to the Risk

Sleeping Problems? Wake Up to the Risk

Having problems falling asleep may mean that you're headed toward metabolic syndrome, a combination of physical symptoms that raise the risk of diabetes, heart disease and stroke. For some, loud snoring may indicate a doubled risk of metabolic syndrome (difficulty falling asleep raises the risk by 80 percent). The risk also increases - by 70 percent - among those who report unrefreshing sleep. All this news comes from a study published in the December 1, 2010, issue of Sleep. Investigators studied 812 adults ages 45 to 74 for three years to assess the relationship between sleeping problems and the risk of metabolic syndrome, which has symptoms including excess abdominal fat, high triglycerides, low HDL (the "good" cholesterol), high blood pressure and high blood sugar. The researchers reported that loud snoring was associated with the development of high blood sugar and low HDL in particular, but noted that other sleeping problems were only generally predictive of metabolic syndrome. Other sleeping problems weren't associated with the development of any particular symptoms comprising metabolic syndrome but were associated with a higher risk of the syndrome itself. The researchers said that their findings suggest that physicians should screen patients for sleep complaints during routine visits.
